ENG: Taking us into the heart of the paintings of Swiss Italian artist Renzo Ferrari, WALKER is no standard biographical film but rather a quest to discover the painter’s personality through association, with objects, images, sculptures… The painter himself is always shown on the move, since he divides his time between his birthplace Cadro (Ticino), Milan and New York. Over the course of his long city walks, he constantly observes the world around him, jotting down notes and making sketches in his notebooks; he draws everywhere, on the train, on a bridge, leaning over a barrier… even standing, from an urgent need to retain all he sees.

DEU: WALKER ist eine Reise ins Innere der Gemälde des Schweizer Malers Renzo Ferrari. Der Film ist weniger ein biografisches Portät als der Versuch, die Persönlichkeit des Tessiner Künstlers durch seine Objekte, Bilder und Skulpturen nachzuzeichnen. Er selbst ist ständig unterwegs – zwischen dem Tessin (Cadro seine Heimat), Mailandbund New York. Während seiner langen Stadtwanderungen beobachtet er unablässig die Welt, übersetzt sie in seine Notizbücher mittels Worten und Skizzen. Er zeichnet immer und überall: im Zug, auf der Brücke, an eine Schranke gelehnt… Er will sich nichts entgehen lasen.

ITA: Il film su Renzo Ferrari non è una biografia, ma una sorta di “spia biografica”, fatta d'indizi scoperti all'interno dei suoi quadri: associazioni, oggetti, sculture, ombre e segnali. Nessun esperto, nessun amico, nessun critico. Solo i suoi quadri e gli elementi visivi e sonori che essi esprimono. Per questo film il mio punto di vista è dunque quello del racconto di fiction, un viaggio biografico attraverso i quadri di Renzo Ferrari. Il film mostra i luoghi milanesi dove vive l’artista. Si vedono i boschi di Cadro (vicino a Lugano), il suo Bateau-Lavoiresterno con le tende al vento, il suo piccolo atelier ticinese. La colonna sonora è mescolata ai suoni della metropolitana di Milano e di New York, città che tanto lo hanno ispirato . Renzo Ferrari è un artista di frontiera.

FRA: Voyage au cœur des œuvres que Renzo Ferrari a peintes entre 2000 et 2003. Ce document tente de cerner la personnalité de l'artiste à travers des associations d'objets, d'images et de sculptures. L'homme est toujours montré en mouvement, entre sa terre natale du Tessin, Milan et New York. Au cours de longues marches en forêt, il observe sans relâche le monde pour le transposer dans ses carnets par des mots et des croquis. Il dessine absolument partout, dans le train, sur un pont, appuyé à une barrière, ou simplement debout, dans l'urgence de ne rien perdre. 
L'ajout d'images filmées, juxtaposées à ses dessins, permet de saisir sa façon de transcrire ce qu'il voit, l'esquisse se mesurant au modèle dans un même plan. La musique, des sons de flûte et de violoncelle mêlés aux sons électroniques, rappelle à la fois l'effleurement du fusain sur le papier et le souffle du marcheur inépuisable. Peu de paroles, juste quelques explications essentielles, les images, les peintures et l'œuvre en cours de création à l'écran.

ENG: A journey to the heart and soul of paintings by Renzo Ferrari, from his 2000-2003 collection. The film attempts to discover the man behind the works through an association of images, objects, shapes, shadows and signs. The artist is invariably shown in movement, dividing his time between his native Milan and New York City. We see the artist's studio, the small drawings in his agenda, scribbled notes in his diary, but also the forest around Cadro near the Swiss city of Lugano, his outdoor atelier, with curtains swaying in the wind, his small studio in Ticino. His constant treks through the forest allow him to observe the world and its inhabitants, whom he transposes into the pages of his notebooks in words or sketches. He sketches everywhere, in the train, on a bridge, leaning against a fence, or simply standing, not wishing to lose anything. Filmed images juxtaposed against his drawings allow us to understand his method of transcribing what he sees, the sketch pitted against the model in the same shot. 
The music-flute and cello mixed with electronic sounds (Christian Gilardi/Zeno Gabaglio) is reminiscent of both the stroke of charcoal on paper and the breath of the tireless walker. There are few words apart from some rudimentary explanations; what predominates are the images, the paintings, and the creative process unfolding on screen.

DEU: Der Künstler Renzo Ferrari ist ein Grenzgänger, sowohl im geografischen als auch im malerischen Sinne. Harald Szeemann schrieb anlässlich einer grossen Ausstellung auf dem Monte Verità: "Es sind Zwischenfiguren, die uns anschauen, und die sich ihren Um- und Lebensraum selber schaffen. Villi Hermann wollte keinen "biografischen Künstlerfilm" über Renzo Ferrari drehen, ihninteressierten vor allem die letzten Produktionsjahre 2000-2003, wo neue Elemente auftauchen, die Immigration, stark sichtbar in der Lombardei. Renzo Ferrari ist Immer in Bewegung, er observiert und skizzert überall. Er fährt auch kein Auto, benutzt nur öffentliche Verkehrsmittel, Tram, Metro, Bus, Taxi und Zug.Ein Aufenthalt vor Jahren in New York hat ihn stark beeindruckt. Diese NY-Erinnerungsbilder tauchen immer wieder auf in kleinen "Fenstern" auf seinen Malereien. Ein filmscher Besuch in New York drängte sich auf. Ich wollte eine Reise in seine Bilder machen und seine fensterhaft aufgebauten Malereienbesuchen, Türen öffnen wie "Files" im Computer. Die Musik für diesen Film ist eine Mischtechnik (wie der Film selber auch), mit afrikanischen Elementen und harten urbanen Rythmen, durchsetzt mit Geräuschen des täglichen Lebens. Christian Gilardi und Zeno Gabaglio haben die Tonspur gestaltet.
